Contact The History of the Folding Bike There have been many who have laid claim to the invention of the folding bike. Humorously, a bike manufacturer who shall remain nameless so as to not unduly embarrass them audaciously claims on their website to have produced the world’s first folding bike in Wishful thinking by their marketing department I suppose. The truth is that the folding bike has been around for considerably longer than one might imagine and most claims of being the first are erroneous. First things first though, you can’t have a folding bike without the invention of the bicycle itself. So a very short history lesson on the bicycle is in order. Here again we have some disputed claims of invention and historians will probably never be able to identify the exact moment of invention. For a while some had claimed that Leonardo Da Vinci invented the bicycle based on a sketch found in his Codex Atlanticus.

This began to turn around in the camera and electronics industries in the s, but Japanese companies didn’t figure out how to make and sell bicycles for the U. As the s opened, the U. While Japanese bicycles were manufactured to very tight tolerances, and nicely finished considerably better than their European competition , the Japanese had not yet come to terms with the average American’s being taller and heavier than the average Japanese.
This gap was wider at the time than it is now, due to the privations the Japanese population suffered during and after the war. Royce Union he most widely distributed Japanese bike of this era was sold under the name Royce Union. This was a speed, pretty much all steel except for the handlebar stem and the Dia Compe brakes. This bike was only available in one size, 20″, which was considerably too small for an average American man. It was equipped with Araya steel rims, which were beautifully made, much smoother and truer than European steel rims of the era This was partly due to design, and partly due to the fact that Japanese steel was not as good as European nor American steel.
Even though these bikes were not durable, they did have their good points, most particularly the Shimano Lark rear derailer. Although the Lark was quite heavy, it shifted markedly better than the French Huret Allvits and Simplex Prestiges that were coming through on the bikes from Europe. The Sugino Maxy cotterless crank was a game changer. The inner chainring was attached using the mm bolt circle, which survives to this day in very wide use.

Contemporary bicycles have many parts made of aluminum (or “aluminium,” if you prefer) for lightness, strength and corrosion resistance. But, the potential calamity of colliding worlds aside, for a show that packs in as many Eighties references as it can muster, Astin is a natural choice. Now aged 46 and a father of three, the actor joins the small band of supernatural-fighting grown-ups in the series, alongside fellow Eighties teen star Winona Ryder and David Harbour, who plays the grizzled local police chief.
So what can he tell us about his character? Sean Astin in The Goonies Credit: I hadn’t really watched the show but I binged it and fell in love with it. But the experience of a child actor has moved on enormously in that time.

Brakes Older Raleigh-made brakes used special cables with moulded ends on both ends of the cables, as shown. These cables are no longer available. They were supplied in different configurations for front, gent’s rear and lady’s rear applications. The cable came with the adjusting barrel. To replace the cable assembly, you would unbolt the adjusting barrel from the caliper.
These cables can often be revived by dripping oil into them and working them back and forth. Later Raleigh-made brakes used standard cables with conventional anchor bolts. Chainguard Braze-ons Older models had a braze-on with a tapped hole on the right chain stay , behind the chainwheel , to secure a full chaincase. Some later models had simple braze-ons on the seat tube and down tube to secure a “hockey-stick” chainguard.
Fork Ends Older models had forged front fork ends , which are 3-dimensional, and are round where they fit into the end of the fork blade.

The frame was free of rust, and in unusually nice condition for its age. I kept as much as I could of the original Dura Ace components, but I knew that I would replace the wheelset, not wanting to ride on 27 inch 20mm tubulars through downtown Portland. At first, I considered a b conversion as the best option for adapting this bike to my riding style.
While possible, this amount of reach is not ideal. There are brake calipers which have enough reach to accomplish the conversion, but they are not in my constellation of desirable components. Instead, I converted it to c, using the existing anodized Dura Ace calipers, which had plenty of reach for a c wheelset. Who created the Interstate System? The concept of an Interstate system as we know it was first described in a report to Congress called Toll Roads and Free Roads. The report rejected the toll superhighway network Congress had suggested; revenue from tolls on most segments would not support the bonds issued for their construction. However, the report added that the country needed a toll-free express highway network. MacDonald, Chief of the U.
Bureau of Public Roads, and Herbert S. Fairbank, Chief of the agency’s Division of Information, prepared the report. The ideas expressed in the “free roads” portion of the report evolved through further study and experience before approval of the Federal-Aid Highway Act of , but the Interstate System began with MacDonald and Fairbank.
